Reading for a Life Change

If you are like me at all, you love reading — or maybe you don’t. Maybe you hate reading and you have not missed a single page turn since your last day as a senior in high school. ¬†Either way, I encourage you to continue reading forward as this entry includes some books that are going to rock your world.

Personally, I’ve always loved reading. As a child, you could usually find me sitting directly in front of a heater vent reading Roald Dahl books (as I read this, the BFG is sitting right next to me to enjoy later today). I loved Lit classes, and even to this day – nothing gives me a bigger high than the smell of a new book. Dear Barnes & Noble: PLEASE create a Yankee candle with that smell— fresh pages + Starbucks will be a hit.

When I became a Beachbody Coach; however, it was a time in my life where my love for reading had taken a real back seat. I was teaching Zumba multiple times a week, stressed out at my job constantly – I just wanted to sit! Something about one of the three vital behaviors of our business being “Read personal development every day” lit a fire inside of me. I mean a FIRE! I went directly out to and bought over $70 worth of personal development books (and if you have ever shopped on that site – you know how many books that is!!) Soon my living room became flooded with Tony Robbins, John C. Maxwell, and Chalene Johnson. Page turn after page turn I found myself in this other realm in my imagination, so-to-speak, but this time it was different. This time, I wasn’t battling a three headed dog in the basement of Hogwarts Castle with Hermione Grainger – this time I

Reading personal development is a great way to inspire a radical life change.

was dreaming bigger for MYSELF. ¬†And the scariest, but also coolest, part of the whole thing was that – holy sh!t…this could actually happen!

When hearing the term “personal development” you might associate it with “self help” — and it is — but it isn’t.

I feel like in many minds, “self help” includes titles such as “Don’t Jump!” and “It Gets Better”…which to some might be a turnoff to read. But in reality, this kind of self help is the kind of reading that requires mind expansion and consideration of your strong vs. weak areas. This kind of reading takes you from where you are, to where you need to be. And the next book takes you further. This kind of reading opens up your mind to your real potential, and clues you in on how to get there, how to move past obstacles, and how to just generally kickass at life!

Before Beachbody you wouldn’t find me in this section in the book store AT.ALL. You would find me reading OK! Magazine, In Touch, Cosmo, etc. (and there is nothing wrong with those publications) but now, I go straight to that area without a second thought. I LIVE for those books and my day is not complete if I don’t start my morning with a chapter from one. People ask me how I am so positive, or driven, etc. It’s these books! I’m TELLING YOU they change your life.

So that being said – here are a few of MY favorites. In parenthesis I have included the topic which they cover. I urge you to get out onto,, head into your local Barnes & Noble or used books store or check out the free reads on your Kindle list. These books will work towards changing your life!

“You Are A Badass” by Jen Sincero (this is my all time favorite) (Helps you to clarify your vision for your life and to live completely unapoligetically)

“Better Than Before” by Gretchen Rubin (assists in learning how to make habits work FOR you and not against you based on your personality traits)

“Eat that Frog!” by Brian Tracy (all about time management – and it’s really short!)

“Failing Forward” by John C. Maxwell (Learning from moments of “failure” so that the failure really wasn’t a failure at all!)

“Crash the Chatterbox” by Steven Furtick (Religiously centered, this books helps you overcome the voice that tells you that you can’t, and guides you towards what Christ wants for you and your life)

“Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert (Getting past your fears and letting your creativity shine through)

“Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life” by Brian Tracy (the power of the mind to overcome obstacles and fear)

“Add More “Ing” To Your Life” by Gabrielle Bernstein (adding more happiness in your life by letting go and being truly you)

“Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg (Women in the workplace. How to overcome glass ceilings, push past barriers, and basically rock whatever you do)

“Personality Plus” by Florence Littauer (Learn how to work with a negative co-worker, a crazy in-law, a lazy spouse, etc. MUST READ FOR EVERYONE)
